The awakened heart says, "I must give, I must not demand." Thus it enters a gate that leads to a constant happiness.

I love this quote!!! Yet another version of it is "better to give than receive", but more eloquently phrased.
I think it's sooooo true also. That's the only reason I love Christmas so much. It's totally commercialized, it's not REALLY jesus' birthday,(Which doesn't mean I don't respect that meaning of Christmas also, but I've sorta' always wondered if he wouldn't be pissed that it's HIS birthday and everyone else is getting presents) but it IS a great holiday because I LOVE to give pressies. Absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it because it makes ME feel so good.
Oh wait...that's selfish isn't it...
Shame on me.
In India it is customary to give people gifts when it is YOUR birthday. I think that is beautiful. I gave everyone presents on my 30th birthday, not because I knew about the Indian tradition ('didn't know about it yet), but because I just felt like honoring everyone who was important to me in my life.
That's how traditions get started. Hazrat ain't got nothin' on me:
Bricks: the NEW Cement
A Gyrobian Sonnet
Wither'd leaves shall fall upon
the ground, turning into dust;
so too must the slinkys be
made of metal.
Fear not the parsnip because
therein lies the truth.
There is indeed a cow level.
Artificially Intelligent sandwiches
live beneath the moon.

That was just a preview of my sonnet collection, generated randomly by Operation: Black Cheddar.
bhakti,
What an awesome custom!! Maybe then I wouldn't dread my birthday either....
GYROBO: I LOVE the sonnet!! I particularly enjoy the visualization I achieve when thinking of Arificially Intelligent Sandwiches. I'm picturing iceburg lettuce and mayo on white toast (lightly toasted; not too brown). There's no sandwich meat (I loathe that term) perhaps because I am a vegetarian. Wait...I'm seeing something...yes!...Soy bologna! What an intelligent sandwich, indeed!!!
Thank you for your sonnet. And feel free to post your sonnets on my site whenever you wish to! Or, whenever you want to! Either way, your sonnets are always at home on JAIBHAKTI!
LISA: Yes, it is a great custom! I think it's a wonderful way to celebrate. It feels so good to make other people happy!
Poem: Gyrobos Dilemna:
A'las we reach the shore,
Tis dark, dusty, but merry,
I hit the floor,
For I think I hear something scary,
Tis only Robobeard the Pirate,
his beard waving in the wind,
He seems awfully perky,
his sword peirces my skin!
I gasp for air, I cry with fright,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Roboshrub Goodnight!
Ode To Cabe
Once 'walking in a midnight clear,
'twas singing Christmas songs with cheer.
When up ahead my eyes did grab
sight of a man with a Confederate Flag.
I ran as fast as my legs would run,
For fear this man was weilding a gun.
"Stop Please" I heard a desperate yell,
I turned around and on a log I fell.
The man with the flag ran right up to me
And said, "Why are you running? Can't you see--
I'm chasing after you to let you know
That I'm fighting for our rights and liberties so,
Please be kind and sign my nomination petition
To help bring my dreams of liberty to fruition."
I gave this man a smile and cried,
"I'm glad to have you on our side!"
Wow, you're better than I am at this stuff.
CABE: Not 'better', just as good. ;)
Wow--this quote was just on my THINKquest Quote header (I programmed the quotes that will appear, but I forgot about this gem!!):
Travel in all the four quarters of the earth, yet you will find nothing anywhere. Whatever there is, is
only here.

Oi.

That link had no picture. What's wrong with Amazon? Geez.
There is something to be said about that quote. I think givers are generally happier than demanders.
ZOMBIE SLAYER: I agree. I believe one of your recent posts prompted me to post this quote. Thanks for all of your great debates and thought provoking posts!
Happy Holidays!

In the Christian faith, they have a great way of defining love as well.
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. ~1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is not demanding. I agree upon that. I love that quote!
Great post! :)
I sometimes think that I give too much and demand too little of others. But I can't help it; I enjoy making others happy!
DEB: To be sure, I am Christian (I know the name throws people off, and my inclination towards Eastern Philosophy!). I love the quote you posted. I think more people should focus on those teachings in the Bible--like, with all of this gay bashing, religion bashing, political party bashing, racism, etc...what ever happened to LOVE ONE ANOTHER!?
Well, your blog is a haven of compassion and acceptance. It's beautiful.
TSHSMOM--Are you a Pisces??? You must have some Piscean blood in you somewhere. We're prone to putting others before ourselves. Well, as I reach my late thirties I've come to realize the truth in statement "Put on your own oxygen mask before helping someone else put on theirs." (referring to airplane speak, of course). We definitely need to take care of ourselves first. Then, there is plenty of time to help others, too!

In case anyone forgot, tomorrow is Festivus! In celebration, I've advanced a copy of my latest graphic novel: "Landlocked Pirate".
GYROBO--You just made me laugh out loud!!!! A very hearty chuckle, indeed. Thank you!!!
MARK: You always post the best quotes. Thank you! Happy Holidays!
Well, I went through that AOL XM thing in Winamp. Apparently, I CAN hear a wide variety of Internet radio programming, including not only XM, but this "ShoutCast" thing. I'm not trying for the videos, though. Not on dial-up.
It's really funny- as I write this, I'm hearing some guy ranting about the antichrist running our public school system or something.

Did they mention that the anti-christ running the public school system was Dubya (i.e. No Child Left Behind)? or is that a given?
:P
Sagitarius here.
Actually my husband has done wonders with me over the years. He gets aggravated with me when I NEVER think of myself. Then HE babies ME for awhile. I've learned to graciously accept this attention. ;)
Now these comments give me pause .............................
...............................................................................................................................................................................
Yes (deep breath) thank you all for giving me pause. The spirit in this place is peaceful, and it good to go to bed feeling good about the last thing you read for the night, or is it morning. Well, it's my bed time either way.
LIQUIDPLASTIC: Thank you. This blog is a testament to my grace filled life. My blogger friends are a great source of that grace; you included!
Happy Holidays!

p.s. It's better to stay away from the sites that annoy or anger you. That's what I've come to do. It's just not worth getting angry over other people's opinions.
I think you were correct in getting angry at that man calling you 'girl', though. For a preacher, he doesn't seem to harbor much of Jesus' good qualities (from what I've read, anyway). On the other hand, I believe rather than judging him, it's good to realize that we are all where we are supposed to be on the spiritual path.
