SAM, World's Ugliest Dog, Dies At Age 14
This post is not a joke. The above photo is not meant to shock you. Please do not leave rude or mean comments about Sam, they will be deleted.
Last night, after Thanksgiving dinner at Cousin Chrissy's house, my other cousin, G., informed me that the 'World's Ugliest Dog' had recently died. I had never heard of this dog before, so G. pulled up an image of him on the computer he was tinkering with. I couldn't believe my eyes. When I saw the dog, Sam, I knitted my eyebrows and thought to myself, 'Who would own a dog like that?'. Then, Galen told me about how Sam's owner rescued him from a pound and gave him a home because she knew that no one else would ever adopt him. I found that very touching, and decided that I wanted to read more about Sam and his owner. It turns out that Sam was a very loving pet, and kept Susie, his owner, very comfortable during her battle with cancer.
The point of this post is simply to share Sam and Susie's story. I think it is absolutely beautiful. Sam passed away on November 18th, but he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. It's been noted that many animals that were deemed 'unadoptable' because of their looks, are now finding loving homes since Sam made the news by becoming the World's Ugliest Dog in 2003. I rescued Kitty Von Kitty nine years ago. She lived in a shelter for 2 years and was never adopted (that baffles me because she has one of the cutest faces of any animal I have ever seen). I don't know if I would have adopted Sam.
Please visit the following links to get the entire story straight from the source:
I thank Susie for the unconditional love that she showed Sam. She showed that even God's strangest, most odd creations can be loved.

Thx for sharing this post. I had seen something about Sam a few months ago when he won the contest. He looked atrocious but had a very good heart. It really makes me take a look at what is important. I did a post about God don't like Ugly, an expression GRandpa Butch often says. But he also says ugly is as ugly does. Sammy wasn't ugly by any stretch, since that is the case. I am sorry he is gone, but from what I read about him on Suzie's blog, he is doing nice things in heaven for others as we speak:) Thx for inspiring and have a great night Bhakti:)
UNCLE PAVIAN-- That's a great point, that dog's don't care what they look like. And I'm very thankful that Susie took Sammie home and gave him a terrific home and showed him the loved that he deserved as a living creature.
Now if we could just start seeing people the same way...
I second that motion.
MAHNDISA--Sammie seemed like a wonderful dog. I wish I got to see him in action (on TV) because I understand that the love he had for his owner was just beautiful.
Thank you for the lovely comments, and I wish you a good night, too.
:)
I saw this dog too,,not the cutest pup, but ...sounds like he has a great heart and I am so happy he had a happy home. You cant judge a book by its cover! I love all animals regardless of how they look!
P.s. Thanks for stopping by for Thanksgiving...the soup was great and the company was even better. We had fun..hope you did too!! :-)
I've seen him off and on for a while. I always thought he looked like a demon, but being an animal lover I was sad to hear of his passing, but happy that he lived out the rest of his life with a caring family.
for a dog lover like me, this story is surely touching.
Poor poochie. I would like to do a Halloween costume of him. Enjoyed looking at his blog site. thanx.
i remember roaming around with my brother looking for the ugliest street dogs when we were kids. i'm so glad that such contests like these are being organized.
may the beautiful soul rest in peace...
I had scared my coworkers with a photo of Sam this Fall, poor ugly guy.
I read about that in my local newspaper. I remember it vividly because the picture was right next to an article about former FEMA director Mike Brown. The picture had no title, so I read "Mike Brown Gets New Consulting Job" and saw a picture of the world's ugliest dog. The two are forever linked in my brain now.
GYROBO--Sammie is much cuter than Mike Brown!
The dog kind of looks a little like Hillary Clinton...
I thought Hillary Clinton was the world's ugliest dog.
ANONYMOUS AND CABE: I don't allow this kind of humor (the kind at the expense of another) on my site. Please refrain from it in the future.
Thank you.
p.s. I generally don't allow political comments, either, as they tend to bring the worst out in people.
Bhakti, I apresiate(SP) your resolve to keep things nice. It is a good character trait. If I feel the need to be mean, I'll go elsewhere. I also stay away from politics, mainly because it is illogical. (2 sides of the same coin fighting w/each other). As a humanist I feel the answers to our problems (for me) lie elsewhere then in politics whitch brings out some of the worst traits in humans.
I refuse to get caught up in it.
"ANONYMOUS AND CABE: I don't allow this kind of humor"
Allowed or not, it was enough to elicit a chortle from me. =)
As for politics, I'd have to agree with Giambattista Vico, over there. Two-party politics are a waste of everyone's time. Nothing changes and nobody wins. It's a mere ruse to support the aristocratic functions of mixed constitutionalism. Better to allow a tyranny or oligarchy than have the wool pulled so snuggly against our eyes.

L>T Yes, I believe in having good character...I also believe in having a really good time...as you can see from my blog.
ALEX--yes, I suppose if you don't like Hilary it would have been deemed funny. I'm not saying either way (whether I like her politics or dislike her politics). I just don't want to open up the doors to any type of political mudslinging 'cause that's not what JAIBHAKTI is about.
Anyone who wants a good debate SHOULD visit Cabe and Stan's site (I'm not promoting their point of view--at all--but they both seem to be very open minded and willing to have a good debate. Check them out for yourselves here. Again, I don't advocate or dismiss their opinions: I'm just saying that if you want to talk American politics, visit Cabe and Stan's site.)
:)
p.s. Alex--it's great to have you back!
ADHDPodcaster: As a school teacher, I commend you on educating the public on ADHD. I hear many comments where people say, "O, ADHD doesn't exist...that's bull!"> However, if you spend time around children (and adults) with ADHD, you realize that it is real.
I'm certainly not a specialist on ADHD, nor have I ever posted about ADHD, and, quite frankly, I don't remember ever seeing you visit this site before. Having said that, I don't know how or what I could contribute to your site.
Please advise.
Until then,
Be well.
Bhakti
Sorry Bhakti,
Didn't mean to offend anyone. I was just agreeing with Anonymous, but I will avoid future political comments on your respective site.
Can I say that the world's ugliest dog is Uncle Pavian?
I don't know who Uncle Pavian is...cept he has a gut wrenching picture of the Twin Towers being attacked. I was living in NYC (East Village) when the towers fell, so I can't stand to see that image anymore.
Don't worry 'bout your comment. I just didn't want to open up a can of worms (politically). Turns out ANONYMOUS was none other than Cousin Chrissy!!
Be well, and visit often.
Bhakti
adhd podcaster is a clever phisherman, there, Johann Sebastian Bhakti. I would never visit someone's blog if they asked me via comments.

ALEX: Johann Sebastian Bhakti you just kill me with your humor!!
I guess what you're really saying is that I've been spammed and had at the same time??
Or I could be wrong. Looks like spammer grammar to me. =)

If this dog is in Santa Barbara, I've seen it. I was afraid to touch it though because it was so ugly.
the owner was telling me that he's blind, or was going blind. It was several years ago. Nice lady.
yes! That's where Sammie lived! You saw him? That's cool. I guess he didn't seem too friendly, if you were afraid to pet him, and all.
By the way, lots of people have said that Sammie had 'Zombie eyes' (no joke!), so, maybe he sensed that you were the Zombie Slayer and decided to shy away from you!
Bhakti - Actually, it was the other way around. I'm sure Sammy was a nice dog, but seriously, he was so ugly I was afraid to touch him. My kid petted him, as did a bunch of other kids. I'm a semi-germophobe though, so that may have been a reason.
Seeing pictures of him and seeing him in real life are two different things. In real life, he's much uglier.
Actually, what am I saying? I shouldn't say I'm sure he was a nice dog, he was a wonderful dog. He was very friendly to the children who petted him and you could genuinely tell that he loved the attention.
Rest in peace Sammy. You'll be missed.
By the way, his owner really liked Sammy. She was a very approachable lady and I talked to her for over ten minutes as the kids petted him. He couldn't play because he was blind. Now I remember.
ZOMBIE SLAYER: Oh my gosh..he was even uglier in person?? That's so sad..you know, to think that a creature would be created so 'ugly'. It's almost as if he had leprocy, or something. But, like uncle pavian noted above, I'm sure that Sammie didn't think he himself was ugly. I bet he was just happy that he found someone to love him, and someone that he could love in return!
I don't know if I would have petted him. It would all depend on his personality, I suppose.
I think it's really cool that the kids wanted to pet him. That's just awesome...but kids are like that, no? (some kids, that is!)
What of lovely post Bhakti! I think Sam is (was) cute!
(Thank you for all your love and hope you are feeling well!)
I am feeling well and dandy, Milady! I hopw you are doing the same!
LOL (lots of love!)
Bhakti
